Maldives

Paradise Predators: A Maldivian Popper Adventure

The Maldives is often pictured as a tranquil paradise of calm, turquoise lagoons and serene white sand beaches. My trip there, however, was for a different kind of experience, one of explosive power, raw adrenaline, and the brutal predators that hunt the edges of those beautiful reefs.

Casting a large popper across the deep blue water under the intense tropical sun is an act of pure anticipation. The rhythmic chug-chug-splash is a dinner bell, and you never know what’s listening from the depths.

The hunt was primarily for the undisputed king of the reef, the Giant Trevally. It’s an act of violence, a dark shape rising from below to annihilate the lure in a whitewash explosion that stops your heart.

The fight that follows is a battle of sheer horsepower, a brutal, unforgiving battle that tests your gear, your back, and your will.

But the action was relentless and wonderfully diverse. The reefs were alive. Packs of electric-blue Bluefin Trevally would streak in to smash the popper, fighting with incredible speed. Out of nowhere, a Wahoo would hit, tearing off on a blistering, reel-screaming run that felt impossible to stop.

Even more primal was the experience of seeing shadowy figures in the water transform into aggressive sharks, charging the lure with intent. Every cast felt like a gamble, a thrilling question of what’s next?

This wasn’t a relaxing beach holiday, it was a week of sore arms, exhaustion, and non-stop adrenaline. It’s the raw, visual hunt and the sheer power of the fish that makes this kind of fishing so addictive.

Belize

Between Jungle and Tide

My first tropical fly fishing trip was to Belize, with the goal of fishing the epic coastal flats for tarpon, bonefish, and permit. When strong winds kept us off the open ocean, we switched to our incredible backup plan: The Belize River. This plunged us into a completely different world. Suddenly, we were casting for tarpon and snook deep in a jungle surrounded by wildlife that, for a Scandinavian angler, had only existed in movies. The roar of howler monkeys became our soundtrack, and we shared the water with crocodiles sunning themselves on the banks.

ICELAND

The Land of Fire, Ice and Huge Trout

Over seven days, I had the privilege of exploring a staggering variety of waters, each with its own unique character and challenges.

The journey took us into the otherworldly Highlands, where the braided, gin-clear channels of the Tungnaá and Kaldakvísl rivers flow through a volcanic landscape that feels like another planet.

Here, sight-fishing for huge Brown trout and Arctic Char was an experience of pure concentration and adrenaline.

Then there were the classic, powerful rivers like Gljufura and Reykjadalsa, where the ultimate prize was the Atlantic salmon.

The rivers were also alive with Sea Trout and aggressive, beautiful Sea-run Arctic Char, adding even more excitement to the experience.

But it was on the vast, historic waters of Lake Thingvallavatn and the nearby Villingavatn that I encountered the true giants of Iceland. This ancient lake, set between tectonic plates, is home to a unique strain of massive, ice-age brown trout.

The fishing was demanding, but the reward was beyond belief. I landed several brown trout, with the biggest weighing 4kgs and my friend Johan, caught a massive Ice Age Brown trout of 6.5kg..
Catching fish of that size and age, a true leviathan of the lake, was a humbling and unforgettable moment.

From the Arctic Char in the highlands to the monster browns of the lakes and the powerful Atlantic salmon, every day offered a new adventure.

GREENLAND, KANGIA RIVER

An Arctic Dream on the Kangia River

Greenland’s Kangia River with Solid Adventures was something I’ll never be able to fully describe.

Stepping onto the world’s largest island felt like entering an untouched, ancient world. The beauty is raw, immense, and almost overwhelming.

The river itself is a fly fisherman’s paradise, but nothing could have prepared me for the sheer number of fish. It was mind-blowing.

In almost every pool, you could literally see hundreds of sea-run arctic char stacked up.

Fishing the famous Hollywood and the Ladder pool were absolutely insane, but the Waterfall pool was on another level. Just as you hear in the stories, the ten meter waterfall creates a natural barrier, and the pool below was packed with some of the biggest, most aggressive char I’ve ever seen.

To be in such a wild and remote place, surrounded by unbelievable scenery and fishing that has to be seen to be believed, was a profound experience.

ARGENTINA, GLACIER KING

Where King's roam: A Journey into Los Glaciares National Park

In 2020 I traveled deep into the heart of Patagonia with Solid Adventures, in search of king salmon.

Our base was the legendary Estancia Cristina, set in the dramatic wilderness of Los Glaciares National Park. In that wilderness, silence became its own presence, broken only by the river’s roar.

A river that held giant king salmon, fresh from the ocean and pushing deep into the valley to spawn. Some of them reached close to 90 pounds. Hooking one felt like tying into a freight train, raw, unstoppable power that was almost beyond comprehension.

Hiking through that valley, surrounded by towering granite walls and battling salmon of such size and strength, was a surreal combination, a place where nature dwarfs you, and the fish humble you even further.

That journey into Patagonia remains one of the most intense and unforgettable fishing experiences of my life.

Argentina, Las Buitreras

Chasing the Silver of Patagonia

After months of anticipation, my trip to the legendary Las Buitreras in Argentina with Solid Adventures was finally a reality.

From the moment I arrived, the raw, windswept beauty of Patagonia promised something special. The target was the formidable sea-run brown trout of the Rio Gallegos, and the river did not disappoint. The fishing was on another level, and I was fortunate to land a whole host of strong, acrobatic fish in the 3 to 5-kilo range that tested my gear with every run.

But the true magic of Las Buitreras is its potential for the truly exceptional. I connected with a few incredible fish that tipped the scales between 7 and 10 kilos.

Those were battles I’ll replay for years to come, the powerful take, heart-stopping runs, and the joy of finally bringing such incredible trophies to the net.

SLOVENIA

An Emerald Dream

Slovenia’s legendary rivers, like the Krka and the emerald-green Soča, were everything I’d dreamed of, famous for their crystal-clear water and teeming with beautiful trout.

Flowing through a stunning alpine valley, the Soča was particularly special as the home of the marble trout, a fish I had longed to catch.

The highlight of my trip happened on its banks, where I had the incredible honor of achieving a “Grand Slam”, landing a magnificent marble trout, a vibrant rainbow, and a golden grayling all on the same day.

To experience that in such a wild and beautiful place was unforgettable!

Denmark

The Silver of Skjern Å: A Danish Tradition

There are some places that call you back, and for me, Denmark’s Skjern Å is one of them. Staying at the fantastic Skjern Å Lodge feels like coming home, a perfect basecamp for the pursuit of the river’s legendary Atlantic salmon and sea trout.

Last year’s trip was incredible, I was there with my friend Lukas for a weekend, and we met up with our guide, Marc Skovby, a man who knows the river’s secrets better than anyone. Our mission was clear, to connect with an Atlantic salmon.

We managed to land not one, but two magnificent salmon and a beautiful sea trout,  a truly incredible result for a weekend’s hard work.

This year, I returned with another friend, Pelle. The river has a way of sharing its gifts, and this time it was Pelle’s turn for a memorable encounter. He managed to tempt a stunningly beautiful sea trout.

Whether it’s the intense, focused hunt for salmon over a weekend or the beauty of a perfect sea trout, Skjern Å always delivers.

It’s a place of camaraderie, dedication, and the unforgettable thrill of chasing silver ghosts in one of Denmark’s most cherished rivers.
